How this map works. Counts come live from the Texas Comptroller's Active Sales Tax Permit Holders data on data.texas.gov. A "new business" is a sales-tax outlet permit issued in the window whose first sale is no more than 90 days earlier, so re-issued permits for old shops are left out. Sole owners and other individuals are excluded. Service businesses that don't collect sales tax won't appear. County shapes: U.S. Census Bureau cartographic boundaries (public domain).
